Chiswick: History, Attractions and Ambiance

Riverside village, villas and garden heritage.

Chiswick is a riverside neighbourhood in west London known for Chiswick House, Hogarth's House, the Thames-side terraces of Chiswick Mall and the busy cafés of Chiswick High Road.

A Palladian villa and an artist's retreat

Chiswick House, completed in the late 1720s for the 3rd Earl of Burlington, is one of the finest Palladian villas in England, and its gardens helped shape the English landscape style. A short walk away, Hogarth's House was the country home of the painter and satirist William Hogarth.

Chiswick was also a brewing village. The Griffin Brewery, long associated with Fuller's, stands by the river. Along Chiswick Mall and Strand-on-the-Green, Georgian houses and old pubs face the Thames, and the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race finishes at Chiswick Bridge.

What to see

Getting there

Turnham Green and Chiswick Park are on the District line, and Chiswick station has South Western Railway trains. The A4 and Hogarth Roundabout give fast access to Heathrow and central London.

Getting there with Mason & Green

Heathrow is usually a short drive via the A4 and M4. Chiswick House has a car park off the A4. For riverside homes on Chiswick Mall, some roads flood at very high tides, so we check access in advance.
