Ealing: History, Attractions and Ambiance

Leafy avenues, film heritage, parks and the classic Queen of the Suburbs.

Ealing has long been called the Queen of the Suburbs. It is home to the world's oldest working film studio, a Georgian villa by Sir John Soane and a fast Elizabeth line link to Heathrow.

Studios and a Soane villa

Ealing Studios has been making films for more than a century and is known for the classic Ealing comedies of the 1940s and 1950s, such as Kind Hearts and Coronets and The Ladykillers. It is still a working studio.

In Walpole Park, Pitzhanger Manor was the country home of the architect Sir John Soane, rebuilt to his design around 1800. Restored and reopened in 2019, it is paired with a contemporary art gallery. Ealing Broadway, Ealing Common and the surrounding streets of Edwardian houses give the area its leafy feel.

What to see

  • Pitzhanger Manor and Gallery – Soane's villa and changing exhibitions.
  • Walpole Park – formal gardens, lake and café.
  • Ealing Studios – a working studio, visible from Ealing Green.
  • Gunnersbury Park and Museum – on the Ealing–Hounslow border.

Eating and atmosphere

Ealing Broadway and the streets around Ealing Green have plenty of cafés, restaurants and pubs. In summer, Walpole Park hosts events and festivals, and the area has a relaxed, suburban feel.

A suggested half day

Visit Pitzhanger Manor and walk through Walpole Park to Ealing Green. Have lunch around Ealing Broadway, then visit Gunnersbury Park or Ealing Common.

Getting there

Ealing Broadway has the Elizabeth line, the Central and District lines and Great Western Railway trains, with a direct Elizabeth line service to Heathrow. The A40 and the A406 North Circular pass close by.

Getting there with Mason & Green

Heathrow is usually a short drive via the A40 and A312 or the North Circular and M4. Ealing Broadway is busy at peak times, so a pickup point on a side street is often quicker.
