Changing the Guard: When and Where to Watch in London and Windsor

Changing the Guard is one of London's great free spectacles: bands, bearskins and precision drill outside the King's home. It doesn't happen every day, though, so a little planning makes all the difference.

When it happens

According to the Household Division, which runs the ceremony:

  • Buckingham Palace (King's Guard): usually Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 11am. Visit London also lists Sundays.
  • Windsor Castle Guard: usually Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 11am.
  • Other days: instead of a full guard change, the guard is inspected by the Captain at 3pm. This is a smaller event.

The ceremony can be cancelled or changed for bad weather, state occasions and other major events. Check the official Household Division calendar the evening before, and again on the morning.

What you will see

Soldiers gather at St James's Palace and Wellington Barracks and march to Buckingham Palace with a band. The handover takes place in the palace forecourt, so the best views are close to the railings. The marching columns along The Mall and Spur Road are easier to see if you can't get to the front.

Where to stand

  • The palace railings: the classic view of the forecourt, but you will need to arrive at least an hour early.
  • The Victoria Memorial steps: raised views over the crowd, but often closed or packed.
  • The Mall or Spur Road: good for the bands and marching, and easier with children.

Also worth seeing: Horse Guards

The King's Life Guard changes at Horse Guards Parade, with mounted soldiers of the Household Cavalry. Visit London says it usually happens daily at 11am, and it is often less crowded than the palace.

Getting there and away

Roads around Buckingham Palace are busy and closed at times during ceremonies. If you are coming by car, we drop you a short walk away, near Green Park or Victoria, and collect you from an agreed point afterwards. A visit to Windsor makes an easy half-day trip by private car from central London.
