London Weather and What to Pack, Season by Season

London's weather is mild but changeable. It rarely gets extremely hot or cold, but it can rain in any month, and one day can feel like three seasons. Packing layers is the secret. Here is what to expect through the year.

The golden rule: layers and an umbrella

Rain in London is spread through the year rather than coming in a rainy season, and showers often pass quickly. A light waterproof jacket or a compact umbrella, plus layers you can add or remove, will cover most days. Comfortable, water-resistant shoes matter more than anything else, because London is a walking city.

Spring (March to May)

Days lengthen quickly and parks fill with blossom. Mornings can be chilly and afternoons pleasantly mild. Pack a warm jumper, a light coat and a scarf for early spring, and lighter layers by May.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is usually warm rather than hot, with long evenings: it stays light well past 9pm around midsummer. Heatwaves do happen, and older buildings and some deep Tube lines can get uncomfortably warm. Bring light clothing, sunglasses, sun cream and a refillable water bottle, plus one warmer layer for evenings.

Autumn (September to November)

September often brings settled, mild days. October and November turn cooler, wetter and windier, and the clocks go back at the end of October, so evenings get dark early. Pack a proper coat, layers and waterproof shoes.

Winter (December to February)

Winters are cool and damp rather than freezing. Snow is unusual in central London and rarely settles for long. Daylight is short: in December it gets dark around 4pm. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the morning and save museums, shows and festive lights for the afternoon and evening. Pack a warm coat, hat, gloves and waterproof footwear.

Check the forecast, not the average

Averages describe a typical month, not your trip. The Met Office publishes the official UK forecast, including warnings for heat, wind, snow and heavy rain.

Weather and your transfer

Bad weather can slow traffic and delay flights. We track flights for airport pickups, and in winter we add more buffer for departures. If you are carrying bulky winter coats and extra bags, mention them when booking so we can choose a car with enough space.
