Tipping in London: A Simple Guide for Visitors

Tipping in London is more relaxed than in some countries, but there are customs worth knowing. Here is a quick guide to restaurants, pubs, taxis, hotels and tours, so you neither under-tip nor pay twice.

Restaurants: check the bill for a service charge

Many London restaurants add a discretionary service charge, usually around 12.5%, to the bill. If it is already there, you do not need to tip on top. It is optional, so you can ask for it to be removed if the service was poor.

If there is no service charge, a tip of 10% to 15% is normal for table service.

Where your tip goes

Since the Employment (Allocation of Tips) Act 2023 came into force on 1 October 2024, employers in England, Scotland and Wales must pass all tips, gratuities and service charges to their workers, fairly and without deductions. That applies whether you pay by card or cash.

Pubs and bars

You do not tip for drinks ordered at the bar in a pub. If you have table service in a bar or gastropub, the restaurant rules apply.

Taxis and private hire

Tipping drivers is appreciated but never expected. Many people round up a black cab fare to the nearest pound or add around 10%. For pre-booked transfers, tipping is entirely optional and at your discretion, for example if your driver helped with heavy luggage or waited during a delay.

Hotels

  • Porters: a pound or two per bag is a kind gesture.
  • Housekeeping: optional; some guests leave a few pounds at the end of a stay.
  • Concierge: a tip is appropriate if they went out of their way, for example to secure a hard-to-get table or tickets.

Tours and guides

For a guided walking tour or private guide, 10% or so is a common thank-you, especially on "free" tours where guides rely on tips.

Paying by card

Card machines often suggest tip amounts. These are just suggestions; you can choose "no tip" or enter your own amount.
