Portsmouth cruise transfers
From early embarkations to busy disembarkation mornings, our Portsmouth service is designed to make cruise travel easier.
Portsmouth is one of Britain’s great maritime cities, with a harbour shaped by naval history, ferry travel, commercial shipping and modern cruise operations. Its waterfront is closely associated with HMS Victory, the Mary Rose, the Historic Dockyard and centuries of seafaring heritage.
Portsmouth International Port grew from ferry operations in the 1970s into a major cross-Channel, freight, ferry and cruise gateway on the south coast. Its location close to the M275 gives passengers direct road access towards London, Heathrow Airport, Gatwick Airport, Southampton and the wider South East.
In recent years the port has invested heavily in cruise facilities. A terminal extension opened in 2023, designed to support growth in cruise calls and improve the passenger experience, while the port can accommodate ships up to around 300 metres in length.
Portsmouth is different from Southampton because cruise passengers generally use the main passenger terminal at Portsmouth International Port rather than a choice of several separate cruise terminals. Cruise berth allocation and access arrangements are managed by the port and can vary by ship, cruise line and day-of-operation traffic planning.
The main passenger terminal serves cruise and ferry passengers at Portsmouth International Port. It is the principal point for cruise check-in, passenger facilities and onward transfer coordination.
The port’s newer cruise facilities and berth arrangements support larger and more frequent cruise calls. The terminal extension was built to improve passenger flow and support the port’s growing cruise programme.
Portsmouth International Port is a working ferry, freight and cruise port. On busy days, passenger cars, coaches, ferry traffic and cruise transfers may be managed through different lanes and holding areas.
For cruise arrivals, your collection is planned around your ship, terminal and disembarkation time. Cruise ships can clear passengers in stages, and timings may be affected by ship clearance, luggage collection, immigration procedures and port traffic.
After leaving the terminal building, passengers should follow the terminal’s signed passenger collection route. Your Mason & Green driver will coordinate the meeting point with you and guide you to the vehicle, helping with luggage where possible.
If you have priority disembarkation, mobility requirements, a large number of suitcases, children, pushchairs, golf clubs or multiple cabins travelling together, please tell us when booking so the correct vehicle and collection timing can be arranged.
For cruise departures, your driver will take you to Portsmouth International Port and drop you as close to the passenger terminal or cruise handling area as permitted by port staff and the day’s traffic management procedures.
Drivers assist with luggage where possible. For families, elderly travellers and guests joining luxury cruises, we recommend building in extra time for unloading, check-in, security and any terminal queues.
Heathrow Airport is a popular arrival point for passengers joining cruises in Portsmouth. The journey is usually via the M25, M3 and A3(M), with timing affected by airport terminal, motorway traffic, school holidays, cruise ship departure schedules and weather.
| Route | Typical private transfer time | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Heathrow Airport to Portsmouth Cruise Terminal | 1 hour 20 minutes – 2 hours | Allow extra time for peak M25, M3 and A3(M) traffic and cruise embarkation days. |
| Heathrow Terminal 5 to Portsmouth | 1 hour 20 minutes – 1 hour 55 minutes | Often slightly quicker for joining the M25 and M3, subject to traffic. |
| Heathrow Terminals 2 or 3 to Portsmouth | 1 hour 30 minutes – 2 hours 10 minutes | Timing depends on airport roads, M25 flow and onward M3/A3(M) traffic. |
Central London to Portsmouth should be planned carefully, especially for same-day cruise departures. Mason & Green recommends allowing a generous buffer for London traffic, motorway delays and port check-in windows.
| Route | Typical private transfer time | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Westminster to Portsmouth Cruise Terminal | 1 hour 20 minutes – 2 hours | Best planned with additional time during weekday mornings. |
| Kensington or Chelsea to Portsmouth | 1 hour 40 minutes – 2 hours 30 minutes | West London departures usually use the A3 or M3 routes and need a sensible traffic buffer. |
| Mayfair or Marylebone to Portsmouth | 1 hour 45 minutes – 2 hours 45 minutes | Allow extra time for Central London traffic. |
| Canary Wharf to Portsmouth | 2 hours 15 minutes – 3 hours | East London departures usually require a longer buffer. |
