Tilbury service overview
Tilbury is London’s historic River Thames cruise gateway, so cruise-day timing, terminal guidance and luggage planning matter. Mason & Green provides a refined door-to-door transfer service for cruise arrivals, departures, hotel stays, airport connections and multi-city itineraries.
Tilbury cruise transfers
From early embarkations to busy disembarkation mornings, our Tilbury service is designed to make cruise travel easier.
Tilbury has been one of London’s most important river ports since the late nineteenth century, positioned on the north bank of the Thames with strong road access to London, Essex, Kent and the wider South East.
The historic passenger landing stage at Tilbury was officially opened in 1930 by Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald. With its grand hall, passenger reception facilities and direct railway connections, Tilbury became a major gateway for ocean liner travel, emigration and arrivals into Britain.
Tilbury also holds an important place in modern British history. In 1948, HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury from the Caribbean, marking one of the most significant moments in post-war migration and the story of modern Britain.
Today the London International Cruise Terminal at Tilbury continues to serve cruise passengers on the River Thames, including home-port cruise operations and selected visiting cruise calls.
Tilbury is different from larger multi-terminal cruise ports because cruise passengers normally use the historic London International Cruise Terminal rather than a series of separate numbered cruise terminals. Access, waiting and vehicle movement are managed around the main terminal building and the day’s ship operation.
The London International Cruise Terminal is the main passenger cruise terminal at Tilbury. It is used for embarkation, disembarkation, luggage handling and passenger transfer coordination.
Passenger pick-up and drop-off is normally arranged directly outside the main terminal building. The area is relatively small, so timing is important to avoid congestion on busy embarkation and disembarkation days.
Tilbury is a working port as well as a cruise terminal. Cruise-day traffic can include private cars, coaches, taxis, luggage vehicles and port operations, so collection points and routes can be adjusted by port staff.
For cruise arrivals, your collection is planned around your ship, cruise line and expected disembarkation time. Disembarkation can be staggered, and timings may be affected by ship clearance, luggage collection, border procedures and port traffic.
Passengers are normally collected outside the main terminal building or at the designated passenger collection area as directed by port staff. Your Mason & Green driver will coordinate with you on the day and guide you to the vehicle, helping with luggage where possible.
If you have priority disembarkation, mobility requirements, a large number of suitcases, children, pushchairs, mobility equipment or several cabins travelling together, please tell us when booking so the correct vehicle and collection timing can be arranged.
For cruise departures, your driver will take you to Tilbury Docks and drop you as close to the London International Cruise Terminal as permitted by port staff and the day’s traffic management procedures.
Because the terminal forecourt is compact, passengers should arrive at their designated embarkation time and allow enough time for unloading, luggage handover, check-in and security. Drivers assist with luggage where possible.
Heathrow Airport is a popular arrival point for passengers joining cruises from Tilbury. The journey is usually via the M25, A13 and A1089, with timing affected by airport terminal, motorway traffic, cruise ship departure schedules and local port access.
| Route | Typical private transfer time | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Heathrow Airport to Tilbury Cruise Terminal | 1 hour 20 minutes – 2 hours 10 minutes | Allow extra time for peak M25, Dartford Crossing and A13 traffic. |
| Heathrow Terminal 5 to Tilbury | 1 hour 20 minutes – 2 hours | Timing depends on M25 traffic and crossing conditions east of London. |
| Heathrow Terminals 2 or 3 to Tilbury | 1 hour 30 minutes – 2 hours 15 minutes | Allow time for airport roads, M25 flow and the A13/A1089 approach to Tilbury Docks. |
Central London to Tilbury should be planned carefully, especially for same-day cruise departures. Mason & Green recommends allowing a generous buffer for London traffic, Blackwall Tunnel or east London routes, the A13 and port check-in windows.
| Route | Typical private transfer time | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Westminster to Tilbury Cruise Terminal | 1 hour 10 minutes – 1 hour 50 minutes | Allow extra time during weekday mornings and major events. |
| Kensington or Chelsea to Tilbury | 1 hour 30 minutes – 2 hours 15 minutes | West London departures need a sensible cross-London traffic buffer. |
| Mayfair or Marylebone to Tilbury | 1 hour 20 minutes – 2 hours | Timing depends on central and east London traffic. |
| Canary Wharf to Tilbury | 45 minutes – 1 hour 25 minutes | Often the quickest Central/East London route, subject to A13 traffic. |
