Practical local guidance for visitors travelling around Hammersmith and Fulham, with key neighbourhoods, attractions, transport connections and private-transfer planning.

Hammersmith and Fulham Travel & Transfer Guide

Explore the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, including its history, main areas, attractions, transport, dining, hidden gems and local ambiance.

Hammersmith and Fulham runs along the north bank of the Thames in west London. It is home to three professional football grounds, famous music venues and the historic palace of the Bishops of London.

Football, music and the river

Few boroughs have as much sport in such a small area. Stamford Bridge (Chelsea FC) and Craven Cottage (Fulham FC) are both in Fulham, and Loftus Road (Queens Park Rangers) is in Shepherd's Bush. On match days the local roads change character completely.

Music and theatre are just as important. The Eventim Apollo and the Lyric in Hammersmith, and the Shepherd's Bush Empire, draw audiences from across London. Olympia, the exhibition centre, hosts major trade and consumer shows, and Westfield London at White City is one of Europe's largest shopping centres.

Places worth knowing

  • Fulham Palace and gardens – for centuries the country home of the Bishops of London.
  • Hammersmith riverside – historic pubs and views along the Thames.
  • Olympia London – exhibitions and events.
  • Westfield London – shopping, dining and cinema at White City.

Getting in and out

The District, Piccadilly, Hammersmith & City and Circle lines meet at Hammersmith, and the Central line serves Shepherd's Bush and White City. Kensington (Olympia) and Shepherd's Bush have Overground stations. The A4 and Hammersmith flyover are the main routes west towards Heathrow and the M4.

Airport transfers from Hammersmith and Fulham

Heathrow is the obvious choice, usually reached quickly via the A4 and M4 outside peak hours. Gatwick is reached across the river via Wandsworth and the A3 or A23, and London City via central London or the A13. Hammersmith Bridge has been closed to motor vehicles for several years, so journeys south of the river use Putney or Chelsea bridges.
