Southwark Travel & Transfer Guide

Explore the London Borough of Southwark, including its history, main areas, attractions, transport, dining, hidden gems and local ambiance.

Southwark runs from Borough Market and the Shard to Peckham and Dulwich. It is also home to Mason & Green's own office on Borough High Street.

Bankside, Borough and beyond

The riverside at Bankside has some of London's best-known cultural sites: Tate Modern in the former Bankside Power Station, Shakespeare's Globe, a reconstruction of the Elizabethan playhouse, and Southwark Cathedral, which has stood near London Bridge in some form for many centuries. Borough Market, beside the cathedral, is one of London's oldest and most famous food markets.

Above it all rises The Shard, completed in 2012 and the tallest building in the UK. Further east, Bermondsey has the Maltby Street food stalls and the Fashion and Textile Museum, and Rotherhithe has historic riverside pubs. In the south, Peckham has a lively arts and food scene, and Dulwich has the Dulwich Picture Gallery, the first purpose-built public art gallery in England.

Places worth knowing

  • Borough Market – food stalls and restaurants.
  • Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe – art and theatre on the river.
  • The Shard – viewing galleries and restaurants.
  • Dulwich Picture Gallery and Dulwich Park – art and greenery in the south.

Getting in and out

London Bridge is one of London's busiest stations, with Jubilee and Northern lines, Southeastern trains and Thameslink services to Gatwick and Luton airports. Borough, Southwark, Elephant & Castle and Canada Water add further Tube and Overground links. The A2, A3 and A200 are the main roads.

Airport transfers from Southwark

London City Airport is usually closest, via Rotherhithe Tunnel or the A13. Gatwick is reached via the A23 or A21 and M25. Heathrow is reached across central London. Because our office is in Borough, we know the local streets and stopping points well.

Pickup tips for this borough

Around London Bridge and Borough Market, streets are busy, with bus lanes and restricted loading. We agree a precise pickup point in advance. For hotels near the river, tell us whether the entrance is on the street or the riverside walk.
