Practical local guidance for visitors travelling around Westminster, with key neighbourhoods, attractions, transport connections and private-transfer planning.

Westminster Travel & Transfer Guide

Explore the London Borough of Westminster, including its history, main areas, attractions, transport, dining, hidden gems and local ambiance.

The City of Westminster is the political, royal and cultural heart of London. It includes Parliament, Buckingham Palace, the West End and several major railway stations.

Royal and political London

Westminster contains many of the UK's most famous landmarks. The Houses of Parliament and Elizabeth Tower (home of Big Ben), Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery are all within walking distance of each other, and the royal parks – St James's Park, Green Park, Hyde Park and The Regent's Park – provide space between the busy streets.

The borough also covers the West End, with its theatres, Oxford Street shopping and the nightlife of Soho and Covent Garden, and some of London's most prestigious residential areas, including Mayfair, Marylebone, St John's Wood and Belgravia.

Places worth knowing

  • Westminster Abbey and Parliament – history at the centre of government.
  • Buckingham Palace – the Changing of the Guard and summer openings.
  • The National Gallery and Trafalgar Square – free art and a famous square.
  • The West End – theatres, restaurants and shopping.

Getting in and out

Paddington has the Heathrow Express and Elizabeth line, Victoria has the Gatwick Express and coach station, and Marylebone and Charing Cross have mainline services. Almost every Underground line passes through the borough. The Congestion Charge and ULEZ apply in central Westminster, and many streets have restrictions.

Airport transfers from Westminster

Heathrow is usually reached via the A4 and M4. London City is reached along the Embankment or via the A13. Gatwick is reached via Vauxhall and the A23 or M23. Stansted and Luton involve longer journeys north via the M11 or M1. Hotel collections are a large part of our work in Westminster, and we plan for one-way systems and limited stopping places.

Pickup tips for this borough

Many hotels in Westminster have small forecourts or none, and some roads have strict loading restrictions. Ceremonial events, state visits and demonstrations can close roads around Whitehall and The Mall at short notice. We monitor these and adjust routes and pickup points as needed.

Frequently asked questions

Do you collect from West End hotels?

Yes. We collect from hotels throughout Westminster, planning the stop around each hotel's entrance and restrictions.

Which airport is best for central London?

Heathrow is usually the most convenient for long-haul flights, and London City for short-haul and business travel.

Do road closures in Westminster affect transfers?

They can. Ceremonial events and demonstrations sometimes close roads, so we monitor them and adjust routes.
